Boxing Betting Guide

Love boxing? Want to make the most of your online boxing betting? In our boxing betting guide we’ll run through the types of bets you can make, how to plan your strategy and the things to look for when choosing a sportsbook for your boxing betting.

Types of Boxing Bets Available

You can place the following types of bets on boxing:

Moneyline

A moneyline boxing bet is a super simple bet. When two fighters face off in the ring, you simply choose which you think will win. That’s it. You’ll see odds for both fighters to win. If there’s one favourite and one underdog, one will have short odds and the other long. If the fighters are close in talent and it’s going to be a tight encounter, the odds will reflect this.

Round Betting

With round betting you place a bet on a fighter to win in either a group of rounds (7-9 for example) or a specific round.

Over/Under Rounds

With this type of boxing bet, you’re betting on the total number of rounds in a boxing match and whether it will be over or under a specific number. For example, if you bet on 7.5+ total rounds you’ll win your bet if the fight lasts for at least eight rounds.

Method of Victory

As well as backing a particular boxer to win their fight, you can add an extra element to your bet by predicting the winning method too – whether knock out (KO), technical knock out (TKO) or disqualification (DQ).

Backing the method of victory as well as the fighter to win gives you an opportunity to win more on your bet. For example, you might only get odds of 4/1 on a fighter winning, but they could be 9/1 to do so with a KO.

Futures Betting

With a futures boxing bet, you’ll place a wager on an outcome to happen in the future. Rather than covering an individual fight, futures bets often focus on a particular fighter claiming a world championship belt in a certain timeframe. For example, Tommy Fury to win a full WBA, WBO, WBC or IBF world title belt before the end of 2024.

Prop Betting

Prop bets are bets on whether a certain outcome will occur in a fight, but don’t necessarily affect the final outcome. Boxing prop bets include, whether:

–          There will be a knockdown in the fight

–          The fight will go the distance

–          There will be a point deduction

–          The fight will go to a decision

–          There will be a knockout

Live Betting

Even the most one-sided boxing matches can change. Maybe one fighter will land a heavy right hook. One might get a cut to their eye. Live In-Play boxing betting enables you to bet on the action as the fighters are in the ring. The odds change in line with the progress of the fight, and it’s up to you to make your predictions.

If one fighter gets knocked down early, their odds of winning the fight might balloon. But they could stage a dramatic comeback. Live In-Play boxing odds let you have your say and bring an extra element of unpredictability to your boxing betting.

Boxing Betting Strategies for Different Types of Bets

Ready to bet on boxing? Get to grips with these boxing tips and strategies before you do:

Strategy for Betting Over/Under in Boxing

When it comes to betting on the number of rounds being over or under a certain number in boxing, it’s all about looking at the past form of the previous fighters. Are they renowned for going the distance? Does one like to slug it out in the early rounds but then fade as the fight progresses? Does the other have a reputation for big knockouts in the early rounds?

Look back at past fight data and use this to help make a judgement on how far you think this fight will go.

Strategy for Boxing Betting on Group Rounds

With group round betting, you’ll bet on the fight finishing in rounds 1-3, 4-6, 7-9 or 10-12. It presents a better option than single round betting as you’ll get lower odds and a higher chance of winning.

Your strategy with this again comes down to how well you understand the fighters and their previous fights – look at their numbers of knockouts, what rounds they were in and their recent decisions. If they’ve had big early knockouts before, it makes sense to back an early group of rounds – say 1-3. If they both often go the distance, back the later rounds.

If it’s looking difficult to predict, you may want to hedge your bets by going for an early group of rounds and a later group of rounds with a couple of separate bets.

Specific Round Betting Strategy

Given that there are 12 rounds in most high-profile fights, you get high odds for predicting the exact round the contest will finish in. Again, it comes down to analysing the data from boxers’ previous fights. Do they seem to always knock their opponent out in the sixth? Is this a trend you should back again?

Remember, with round betting, you have to be right on the money with the specific round to win. Even if there is a trend for a sixth round KO, it could happen in the fifth or seventh in this particular fight. If you want to hedge your bets, there’s always the option to bet on group rounds instead.

Live Boxing Betting Strategy

Forget previous fights, your live boxing betting strategy all comes down to the action in the ring right now. With live betting, the key is to look for an edge developing in the fight. Is one boxer getting on top? Have they landed their big right hook? Are they struggling against a southpaw? These are the small details to look out.

Big factors also include whether or not there’s been a knockdown. If one fighter hits the canvas, the live odds will be stacked against them. But this doesn’t mean you should automatically back the other fighter. Watch a little to see what happens. Is the fighter genuinely on top or could the other put together a comeback? Give it time and don’t go too early on your live bets. Also listen to your gut – if you have an inkling on an outcome, go with it.

Strategy for Betting on Boxing Upsets

Upsets do happen in boxing. Even an underdog going into a fight with the odds stacked against them can come out with a famous win. And if you predict it, there’s the chance to win big.

When it comes to betting on boxing upsets, you should look for the small details that could potentially swing a fight. Does the champ struggle against southpaws? Have they recently had an injury? Has something in their private life affected their training camp? Have they changed their training team or employed a new strategy?

On the other hand, look at the underdog too. Are they an up-and-comer? Have they shown real potential in their last few fights?

Often it’s the small margins that can make all the difference when it comes to backing and winning on an upset.
