World Cup | Day Nine | Preview and Odds

Another day of World Cup action sees tournament favourites Brazil face Costa Rica in the early kick-off, with Nigeria and Iceland playing in between Serbia v Switzerland.

Brazil will be eager to put their disappointing draw against Switzerland behind them with a win against Costa Rica, while the Swiss themselves will look build on that result against current group leaders Serbia.

Elsewhere, in Group D, the Super Eagles need points on the board against Iceland if they are to stay in the tournament.

Our football betting expert runs through the best World Cup bets ahead of the triple header.

Brazil v Costa Rica

Neymar and co had a tough time against Switzerland in their 1-1 draw in Rostov last week, and they’ll be hoping to put that right when they face Costa Rica in their second Group E match.

The Brazilians are well fancied to win the tournament in Russia this summer, but they’ll need a good result against Los Ticos to ensure they qualify from their group without any issues.

Costa Rica succumbed to Serbia in their opening match thanks to an Aleksandar Kolarov free-kick. The match up was devoid of any real quality, but they’ll need that in spades if they are to pull of a win against Brazil.

I fancy the Brazilians to turn on the style in this one, and they can backed at 7/5 to win in both halves.

Nigeria v Iceland

Iceland were impressive against Argentina last weekend, and their team spirit and work rate has bared fruit already in Russia. They will know that a win against Nigeria will give them an excellent chance of making the last-sixteen.

Nigeria offered little attacking threat against Croatia in their Group D opener, and they’ll need plenty of creativity to break down the stubborn Icelandic defence.

The Super Eagles need a win to avoid boarding an early plane home, and the likes of Victor Moses, John Obi Mikel and Odion Ighalo will need to be on form if they are to claim the three points.

Both teams will fancy their chances in this one, and it’s a hard one to call, but I think both teams to score and Iceland to nick it at 5/1 is a good bet.

Serbia v Switzerland

The Serbs got their World Cup campaign off to a strong start with their 1-0 win against Costa Rica, and a victory against Switzerland will be enough to see them through to the last-sixteen.

Despite their 1-0 win being a scrappy affair, Serbia were strong defensively last week and will be confident of posing a threat at the other end of the field with Aleskandar Mitrovic and Dusan Tadic in their ranks.

There are no ‘gimmes’ in this group however, and Switzerland will want to build on their respectable draw against Brazil to make things interesting going into the final round of fixtures in Group E.

I can see this being a cagey affair, and I can’t see there being too many goals. I’ll be going for a draw and both teams to score at 7/2.
