The Money Makers: Mayweather vs McGregor

After all the trash talk, rumours and drawn-out contract quarrels, it’s actually happening: Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Octagon phenomenon Conor McGregor will go toe-to-toe in Las Vegas on 26th August.

Widely regarded as the greatest pound-for-pound boxer of all time, Floyd ‘The Money’ Mayweather heads into this fight with an immaculate record of 49-0, and 26 knockouts to boot. What’s more, another victory would give Mayweather a satisfying number of 50 wins in 50 tries, moving him past a 49-0 record held by Rocky Marciano since 1956.

Conor ‘The Notorious’ McGregor, on the other hand, will be making his boxing debut in Vegas. Aside from some highly controversial sparring of late with Paulie Malignaggi, McGregor is a newbie to the ropes.

But before you rush over to bet on boxing with ‘Golden Boy’ set firmly in your sights, it’s worth considering McGregor’s MMA record. With a whopping 21 wins in 24 bouts – and an ego to match – McGregor has separated bigger and heavier men than Mayweather from their senses.

The ring may be an alien environment to the cheeky chappie Irishmen, but fortunately his slight height, reach and age advantage (he’s 12 years younger than his opponent) could make him feel right at home. Uncertainty, intrigue and integrity are what make this star-studded, diamond-encrusted bout so mouth-watering.

A nine-figure purse

Then there is the money. With purses swelling into nine figures, this gargantuan super fight is set to not only break all of boxing’s box office records, but obliterate them into the stratosphere.

In return, Mayweather is anticipated to take home $400 million, while boxing virgin McGregor sets to make $127 million*. To put this into perspective, this year’s Wimbledon winner, Roger Federer, would need to win The Championships more than 57 times to earn the same kind of pay day as McGregor. Only 49 left to go, Roger…

At Grosvenor Sport, we wanted to dive a little deeper down the rabbit hole. We were curious to work out just how much money both fighters will earn per second, when they take to the ring on August 26. So we did.

We created the Money Maker tool, which allows fans to see just how much money the fighters will earn as the fight progresses. For instance, should the fight finish after six minutes, Mayweather Jr will net an eye-watering $1,111,111 per second, while McGregor bags $352,778.

Have a go yourself! Predict when the bell will ring and move the slider to find out how fast the fighters’ millions are made. You can also bet on when you think the fight will finish – hopefully giving you a great payday, too (we’ve even doubled the odds!)
