Horse Racing | St Leger Festival | Preview and Odds

The final Classic of the season is upon us as the St Leger takes places at Doncaster on Saturday.

Our horse racing betting expert previews the big race and gives you his tip, as well as best bets for the rest of the four-day Festival.

Logician the one to beat

The market for this year’s Leger is headed by John Gosden’s Logician who looks to be a horse with the world at his feet.

The son of Frankel is unbeaten in four career starts and put to bed a solid field in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York last time. He stayed on really strongly in the last two furlongs, suggesting this 1m6f trip should hold no fears and given that, he will surely be hard to beat here.

Gosden and Frankie Dettori teamed up to win the race in 1996 with Shantou and I expect them to be celebrating in the winners’ enclosure again here. He’s an even-money shot currently and I’d imagine he’ll go off a lot shorter than that come race time.

Snap up Alligator Alley in Flying Childers Stakes

On the proceeding day, I’d be keen on Alligator Alley if he lined up in the Flying Childers Stakes. Joseph O’Brien’s two-year-old couldn’t have been more unlucky in the Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood when despite being hampered twice, flew home to finish second to Liberty Beach.

He showed that run was no fluke and that he is clearly a horse of immense ability when taking the Listed Roses Stakes at York last time. Again he met trouble in running and had to come from off the pace, but managed to get on top late and was probably a better winner than the bare result suggested.

His sire Kingman has enjoyed a fantastic season and I’d expect Alligator Alley to get his nose in front again here. He looks the bet at 2/1 with Grosvenorsport.com.
