Darts | Final showdown between MVG and Wright at Ally Pally

Our darts betting expert has picked out some top tips ahead of the World Darts Championship final at Alexandra Palace, with Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright having made it to the final hurdle.

Predictions

 Winner – Michael van Gerwen – 4/11

Michael van Gerwen v Peter Wright

Michael van Gerwen is pursuing his fourth title after overcoming England’s Nathan Aspinall 6-3 in the semi-final on Monday evening.

Meanwhile Peter Wright emerged victorious against Wales’ Gerwyn Price, recording a 6-3 scoreline to make it to his first PDC World Championship final since 2014. As fate would have it, it was none other than MVG who defeated Wright 7-4 that day to claim his first ever world title. Wright has already promised to exact revenge for it in Wednesday’s showdown.

Van Gerwen hit just three 180s in the semi-final while, earlier in the evening, Wright cruised past third seed Price with 16 180s and a 98 average.

There are no two ways about it; Van Gerwen is a better player than Wright, illustrated explicitly through the number of times he has beaten him in finals. It’s therefore unsurprising that the Dutchman goes into this as the odds-on favourite.

There is little to suggest that he can’t deliver here, although Wright can stick in the match early on prior to the typical surge of legs for the number one darts player in the world.

MVG is 11-0 against Snakebite in PDC Majors and World Championships and 14-7 in legs played at Ally Pally. Based on their head to heads and respective recent results, 7-3 seems plausible as an outcome for Wednesday and can be backed at 5/1.
