With the Oxford v Cambridge boat race upon us once again, our tipster brings us some thoughts and tips ahead of the annual event this weekend.
The Boat Race
The River Thames plays host once again to the annual Boat Race contested between Cambridge University and Oxford University, and Grosvenorsport.com has you covered if you fancy a flutter on the 164th edition of this most traditional of contests this Saturday.
The 4.2 mile-long race along some of the most iconic parts of the river has seen its fair share of tempestuous battles down the years, but it is Cambridge University who are making waves in the betting and are 33/100 favourites to reclaim the Boat Race Trophy this time around.
It hasn’t happened since 1978, but boats have on occasion been known to sink during the race, leaving punters cautious of taking in water with their bets, but at 20/1 for any boat to sink and 50/1 for both to go down, bettors can rest-assured that the minor details of a submerged boat won’t leave them stranded.
Hoping to avoid both the literal and the metaphorical sinking feeling though, are Oxford, who aren’t going into this year’s encounter as favourites, despite having triumphed in four of the last five contests, as they are backed at an outside 2/1 to row to victory.
Although it hasn’t been the most glorious of Boat Race decades for Cambridge, they are odds-on to turn it around for this contest, and I think they are certainly in with a good chance of taking their overall tally to 83 wins, putting them three ahead of their Dark Blues rivals.
There is, of course, always the potential outcome of a draw but, having only occurred on one occasion, and a long way back in 1877, I’d say the generous 10/1 price is perhaps a bit of a long shot.
With a well-documented animosity and rivalry between the two university crews, it’s sure to be full steam ahead for both sets of eights on Saturday, but with the Light Blues of Cambridge favoured to power to victory, I think we are going to see a wallowing Oxford left in their wake.
