Darts | BDO World Championships 2019 | Preview and Odds

This weekend sees the BDO World Darts Championship begin at Lakeside Country Club and Glen Durrant has his eyes firmly set on a third successive world title.

Durrant had to be at his best to beat Mark McGeeney 7-6 in a close encounter in 2018, but will his fellow Englishman fancy his chance of revenge or will someone from outside the top-16 seeds cause an upset?

Our darts betting expert picks out the best bets ahead of the tournament.

Durrant the one to beat

Despite not being the current number one seed, ‘Duzza’ is still the one to beat and Grosvenorsport.com have installed him as the Evens favourite to complete a Lakeside treble.

This will be his last tournament in the BDO Darts organisation ahead of a switch later this month to the PDC and he will definitely want to end on a positive note. It is hard to see past him securing the world title once again.

However, at Evens, his odds are too short to be my selection for the tournament, so it is worth looking for a bit of value further down the field if the 48-year-old does somehow slip up.

The Hammer set for Lakeside debut

While Durrant makes the switch from the BDO to PDC, the likes of Wes Newton and Andy Hamilton have made the reverse move.

Hamilton lost his PDC tour card at the end of the 2017 season and opted to take a year out of the sport.

‘The Hammer’ is back playing to a solid standard now though, and reached the final of the BDO Welsh Open as well as the quarter-finals of the Belgium and Danish Open to move up to 27th in the ranking.

Despite that rapid rise he had to come through a playoff to reach these Championships and enters at the preliminary stage where he will have to overcome Canada’s David Cameron (no, not the former British Prime Minister!) so he will have to win a qualifier to even make the main draw.

Even though he has plenty of obstacles in his way, Hamilton has plenty of experience on the big stage, and being a former PDC World Championship finalist, I feel he is worth an each way bet at 20/1.
