Andrea Atzeni: Saturday 22nd July Preview

Squeaker 14:30 Newmarket

I start with one for Marco, she ran a very promising race first time out at Doncaster over 7 furlongs. It looks like we are going to get quite a bit of rain tomorrow, the ground could be anything, but she’s out of a German mare so the ground shouldn’t be an issue for her. For the class of race, and apart from Varian’s which improved on her second start, it doesn’t look the best race, an 80-rated horse may be good enough to win it unless the newcomers are any good.

Almaty Star 15:05 Newmarket

He was a little bit disappointing the last day at Doncaster, he pulled too hard, the pace was slow, and he didn’t finish the race off. He’s off a mark of 82 and it is a competitive race but he’s been gelded and connections have a hood on tomorrow, which it looks like he needs, it might help him relax a bit more. He’s a 3yo taking on tough, older horses which is always hard, but if you ignore his last run and if he settles he must a have a good chance.

Saxon King 15:40 Newmarket

It’s a tough race, he obviously won at Chester and on the Rowley Mile when William Buick rode him. I think you can ignore the Britannia run, he was slowly away and to be fair he didn’t run too bad if you watch it back. He goes on any ground, he’s won on soft, so if the rain comes he will be fine. You’ve got Havana Blue in there for Clive Cox who won here last time, and it’s a very tight race.

Ghara 16:15 Newmarket

She’s obviously a 3yo taking on some older fillies, but you can ignore the last run at Ascot, she missed the break, never got in it but she didn’t run too bad considering. She’s got to up her game tomorrow against higher rated fillies like Novakai and Time Lock. In a race like this you are always looking to place and nick a bit of black type if you can, she’s there to win, but the black type is important. She may just struggle against this class of filly and the first few in the betting, but it would be nice to get a place.

Twilight Guest 16:50 Newmarket

He’s still a maiden, he ran well the last day and they don’t look superstars in here, so hopefully he will get his head in front. He’s been knocking on the door, but it would be nice to win one.

Final Watch 17:25 Newmarket

He’s a solid horse, he won under Neil Callan and is backing up quickly, but he’s a course and distance winner which always helps, and if the last run hasn’t taken too much out of him it does look like a winnable race to be fair. There doesn’t look anything in the race that is improving, or well handicapped, and he’s in form so he should have a very good chance to win again.
