Andrea Atzeni: Royal Ascot Day 2 Preview

14:30 Queen Mary Stakes

Karl Burke thinks a lot of Beautiful Diamond and she can follow up for the stable in this race after Dramatised last year. I rode the second when she won her maiden at Nottingham and although my filly ran a good debut, the winner was very impressive. Balsam would be an interesting runner over from France if they get some more rain at the track.

15:05 Kensington Palace Handicap

Joseph O’Brien has a couple of live chances with Adelaise and Yerwanthere, who looked unlucky last time and could be well handicapped, and Sir Michael Stoute knows the family of Crystal Caprice very well and it’s interesting she’s dropped back in trip, but she is drawn wide, so I think Lady Eros is very interesting drawn down on the inside. She looked like she had plenty left when winning at Yarmouth last time.

15:40 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes

Prosperous Voyage took a long time to go past her rivals at Epsom when winning a weak looking Group 3 at Epsom, and I prefer Jumbly to improve on her second run back. She won on the round course here last summer and I am not sure how strong this race actually is. Grande Dame is a very consistent filly, but she has her first run back.

16:20 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes

It’s tough to separate these as they are so closely matched, five of the 6 runners are rated within 2lbs of each other. Ryan Moore gave Luxembourg a very good ride when he won the Tatts Gold Cup dictating the pace, but he may not secure such an easy lead here and Bay Bridge may reverse the form. However, Adayar is also very tactically versatile and looked back to his very best at Newmarket from which the second came out and won a Group 1 in France next time, and the fourth subsequently won the Diomed at the Derby meeting.

17:00 Royal Hunt Cup

I ride Outbreak who has been slowly away in the past. He’s been consistent which is why he runs off his highest mark. We are drawn in the middle so we will see how he jumps and what options we have. If I could ride another one it would be Astro King for the in-form Kubler’s. He’s gone well in this race in the past, looked unlucky at York on his reappearance, and should now be spot on.

17:35 Queen’s Vase

My ride Hadrianus finished behind Gregory at Goodwood, but I am hopeful I can improve with the extra distance. He didn’t like the soft ground at Chester, but he’s got an each-way chance here. I do think it will be tough to reverse form with Gregory, who has a stout pedigree and will also improve for the trip. Maybe I can finish in the places behind him again.

18:10 Windsor Castle Stakes

Magnificent Match was bought at the breeze-ups and is the only horse in the field making his debut, so it’s a big ask for my mount. It looks a very open race, but Maximum Impact was impressive over the track last month and has a very good juvenile pedigree.

Best regards.

Andrea
