With the Bundesliga becoming the first of Europe’s top football leagues to confirm its return to action, all eyes are now on German football as we look for something to fill the void left when sport was universally suspended due to COVID-19.
Ahead of this weekend’s resumption, we take a look at 10 of the most likely candidates in the Bundesliga to complete a big transfer in the summer.
Jadon Sancho, Winger, Borussia Dortmund
Perhaps the most talked-about young player in world football right now, Sancho has become a superstar since leaving Manchester City for Borussia Dortmund a couple of years ago. The 20-year-old has tallied 14 goals and 15 assists so far this season aiding Dortmund’s title challenge, attracting the attention of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Real Madrid believed to be keen on taking him to La Liga while Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been touted to be looking to bring him back to the Premier League.
Timo Werner, Striker, RB Leipzig
Every club is looking for a young, 20-goal a season striker to add to their ranks and there aren’t many better in Europe today than Timo Werner. The 24-year-old has eclipsed the 20-goal mark this season for the second time in his career with 21 in 25 Bundesliga appearances prior to the season being suspended and has been linked with a move to Liverpool for some time.
Kai Havertz, Midfielder, Bayer Leverkusen
Like Sancho, Havertz has ascended himself into the conversation for being one of the best U21 prospects in world football following a breakthrough campaign last season with Bayer Leverkusen. Since August 2018, the 20-year-old midfielder has 23 goals and nine assists in total, sparking rumours that he could be set for a summer move with Jurgen Klopp keen to bring him to Anfield.
Philippe Coutinho, Attacking Midfielder, Bayern Munich
Having failed to make the grade at Barcelona following his big-money move from Liverpool, Philippe Coutinho has spent this season on loan with Bayern Munich, scoring eight goals and providing a further six assists in 22 Bundesliga appearances. With no future at the Nou Camp, Coutinho has been subject to reported interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.
David Alaba, Left-Back, Bayern Munich
The emergence of Alphonso Davies at the Allianz Arena has seen Alaba forced to move inside to centre-back in order to receive regular minutes in the Bayern Munich side. Now 27, Alaba has won everything there is to win during his time at Bayern and there have been reports that he is seeking a new challenge after this season. Manchester City and former manager Pep Guardiola has been a long-term admirer of the Austrian.
Milot Rashica, Winger, Werder Bremen
One of the lone bright spots in an otherwise dismal season for 17th-placed Werder Bremen, Milot Rashica has bagged seven goals and provided and further four assists in the Bundesliga so far this season. Bremen are eight points adrift of safety and are odds-on candidates to be relegated, and Rashica will be a name who comes up in transfer conversations if he continues his form over the final nine games of the season, with Liverpool and RB Leipzig believed to be keen on signing him.
Dayot Upamecano, Centre-Back, RB Leipzig
One of the top young centre-backs in the game today, 21-year-old Dayot Upamecano has been a mainstay in a Leipzig defence for the last three seasons as they have emerged as a regular contender for Champions League qualification in the Bundesliga. Yet to be capped by France, Upamecano may have to move to a bigger name club in the summer to break into that international setup, with Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Manchester United said to be keen.
Filip Kostic, Winger, Eintracht Frankfurt
After watching Sebastian Haller and Luka Jovic leave the club for West Ham and Real Madrid respectively last summer Filip Kostic has come into his own this season with nine goals and 11 assists in all competitions so far. Inter Milan are believed to be keen on signing him after seeing a bid reportedly rejected last summer, while Crystal Palace are also linked with a swoop.
Marcel Sabitzer, Midfielder, RB Leipzig
Despite joining RB Leipzig in the summer of 2014, 26-year-old Sabitzer’s breakthrough campaign has come in 2019/20 with 15 goals and eight assists across 35 appearances in all competitions so far this season. The Austrian can operate in either a central position or wide on the right, offering great positional flexibility and versatility. Sabitzer is supposedly on the radar of both Arsenal and Tottenham.
Philipp Max, Left-Back, Augsburg
Augsburg defender Philipp Max has been capped at international level by Germany but could be looking for a step up from his relegation-threatened employers in the summer. Max has five goals and seven assists from left-back so far this season and has been linked with a move to the Premier League with Liverpool and West Ham said to be interested.
