Weekend breaks in the UK are the answer when you need a pick-me-up with your mates or want to plan something bigger, like a stag do, with all-important entertainment, such as a trip to Grosvenor casinos, factored in.
Sometimes you just need to escape the humdrum routine of life and the good news is that you don’t need to break the bank to do it. Who needs Las Vegas or Ibiza when there are so many great UK destinations that totally nail it on every wish list front?
We’ve done the groundwork, so you don’t have to, and have come up with a city breaks shortlist with our top 3 recommendations. Great city vibe? Tick. Quick access to and good range of pints? Double tick. Food you know and love. Triple tick. Plenty of action and easy to travel around? That’ll be 4 ticks.
1). London
The capital has it all when it comes to the best night out during a city break with the lads. It comes up trumps with the greatest number of bars, British eating places and breweries. Nothing to worry about here with language barriers interrupting the flow of things or finding somewhere to eat where everyone’s food tastes can be catered for. Shared taxis aren’t too pricey either (around a fiver each with a few of you) but most of the time, it’s quicker to jump on a tube, with several underground lines now running 24/7.
For good, easy dining, visit Hard Rock Café or Gourmet Burger Kitchen, for dining that’ll cost around £15 per person. For something a bit smarter, try Dean Street Townhouse for full on comfort food or mouth-watering steaks at one of the Hawkesmoor locations.
When the night’s really getting going, take a jaunt over to swanky Knightsbridge in your smartest gear and hit the world-famous casino tables at The Park Tower, London. If you haven’t already eaten or need a late-night snack, browse the menu at the fantastic in-house restaurant. A stone’s throw from the legendary Harrods and Harvey Nicholas, you’re in the heart of one of the capital’s most desirable areas.
Another venue we think will pop your cork in the big smoke is The Victoria, London. Sometimes referred to as The Vic, this hot spot is a home from home with blackjack, poker rooms, jackpot slots and live sports. Settle in for a game or two with a pint, or something fancier if it tickles your tastebuds.
If the night’s still young but your mates are dropping like flies, you can always indulge in a bit of sports betting or online games back at base, while they’re snoring away in the other room.
Still time and energy to add more to your weekend break? London is proud of its 100+ breweries, dotted around the city. Why not take a tour the next day and sample some of the best crafts out there? London is the stag do dream.
2). Liverpool
If it was good enough for The Beatles, it’s good enough for us. Home to music, culture, an awesome waterfront, superb entertainment and wonderful eating and drinking holes, it’s second on our list for UK city breaks to go to. Even if some of the native Liverpudlians’ accents have you stymied for a minute, you’ll love this big-hearted, energetic part of northern England.
Eat at Yard and Coop for tasty fried chicken that comes reasonably priced or try George’s Great British Kitchen for fine food in a cool, pub-style location. Dinner out usually costs around £10 per person, so it’s totally affordable. Enjoy a tipple at Berry and Rye or start your night out with Be At One, known for its wallet-friendly cocktail range and fun vibe. A pint in Liverpool comes out cheapest in our top 3 destinations round up, at around just £3 per glass.
For some light entertainment, jump in a cab for about £2.60 per person (or walk) to the Leo Casino, on the famous Queens Docks, boasting panoramic river views. Offering both traditional and modern-day gaming, try your luck in the poker room, at the roulette table or get slots happy from 10p a go. If you can’t decide what to play or need a nudge in the right direction, work out the best game for you with our gaming guide.
If you can squeeze it in, we’d recommend a trip to The LFC Stadium at Anfield, ideal for football fanatics. Well worth the tour. There’s also a Mersey River cruise that’ll give you a breath of fresh air while getting to do some sightseeing simultaneously.
3). Manchester
Another win for the north! In third place, Manchester gets our vote when planning city breaks for you and your squad. Best known for its revitalised quayside and football connections, it’s so much more than that, with award-winning food and drink, tons of activities and, aside from a bit of rain now and then, friendly locals.
Manchester has an incredible selection of artisan products, offering city break visitors tons of breweries and microbreweries, some serving home-grown blends, at around £4 a pint.
Go karting, anyone? Tour of the Old Trafford or Etihad Stadium? There are plenty of day-time activities in Manchester to complement its top-rated night life.
Line your stomach before ramping things up a notch and head to Pieminster, serving hearty, British pies cheaply. The Hip Hop Chip Shop is also a strong contender, showcasing good quality English grub. When eating out in Manchester, you should be able to get a good meal for around £12.75 each.
You don’t have to wait until dark for the gaming to begin. The casino tables are calling day and night at Grosvenor Casino Manchester, home to an interactive games lounge, poker room and live sports betting. There’s even a 240-seat card room.
Once you’re back in your lodgings, the fun needn’t stop there. If you’re on a roll, why not extend the night with a spot of online casino gaming?
For a city break that covers all the ‘musts’ and ‘wants’, there’s no need to dig out your passport. Take the hassle and expense out of long flights to far-flung destinations and keep it local with one of these top 3 locations. You’ll be glad you took our advice.
