PDC World Championships: Mighty Mike might make more history

The PDC World Championships kick off on December 13th and it’s looking like another fierce competition. The PDC World Championship has become a staple of winter sporting events, expect fancy dress, 180s, and the best darts players in the world going head to head.

Our betting expert looks at the big players and selects his winner for this year’s PDC World Championship.

Main Selections:

Michael van Gerwen to WIN at 11/10

Dark Horse Selection

Dave Chisnall to WIN 25/1

Michael van Gerwen is yet again going into another major tournament as favourite priced at a short 11/10. MVG is looking like he’ll become the best darts player of all time and could even better Phil Taylor as the most decorated player ever.  He’s certainly not shy when it comes to major tournaments and 2019 has been no exception. This year MVG racked up the PDC World Championship on January 1st, the World Grand Prix, Premier League, Players Championship Finals, the Masters and the World Series of Darts. That’s quite a tally of majors to have in one year. All these accolades make him the one to beat going into the tournament.

The betting market suggests that Gerwyn Price is the closest man to knocking MVG off his perch and is priced at 5/1 to do so. Price hasn’t had a 2019 as successful as van Gerwen’s, but he’s had a fantastic year nonetheless. He goes into this tournament having won the Grand Slam of Darts while getting to the final of the European Championship and Players Championship. A steady fifth-placed 5th finish in the Premier League left Price feeling as though he’d ‘bombed’ a lot of opportunities that came his way. He finished that campaign with six draws and he believes that he should have been victorious in at least five of those. There’s no better reply to a disappointing major than winning the World Championship.

‘Snakebite’ Peter Wright rounds off the top three market favourites at 12/1. Wright’s coming off a decent year getting to the Champions League of Darts final, Grand Slam of Darts final and the Masters semi-final. It hasn’t quite reached the heights of his stellar 2017 and 2018 campaigns but it’s put him at a steady pace going into the tournament. A firm fan favourite, I think it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing more than one colourful mohawk enter Alexandra Palace this year.

Dark Horse

This may take a few by surprise, but when looking at stats and form it does make sense. David Chisnall loves going far in a major tournament and knows how to reach finals. In his five major PDC finals, he’s lost to Phil Taylor (twice) and Michael van Gerwen (three times). He’s lost to the top two darts players of the past few decades which is nothing to be ashamed of. Chizzy has been playing excellent, consistent darts that have got him into the later rounds of most major tournaments over the past few years, so don’t be surprised if you hear ‘Play That Funky Music’ in the final. He’s priced at 25/1. If only we could place an EW bet.
