Darts | 22/1 shot to upset Michael van Gerwen at Players Championship

There’s no rest for the wicked as the darts action continues with the Players’ Championship at Minehead.

In last season’s tournament, Daryl Gurney denied Michael van Gerwen a fourth successive win, but who will come out on top in a fine weekend of darting action? Our darts betting expert has picked out some top tips and shares his tournament winner prediction.

Gerwyn Price is simply in the form of his life at the moment, and fresh from his Grand Slam of Darts win last weekend, the Welshman will be full of confidence – especially with the manner of his victory over Van Gerwen and Peter Wright in the semi-final and final respectively.

Up until the final, Peter Wright looked the man to beat as he dropped just six legs in winning the group stage at the Grand Slam, before impressively seeing off Rob Cross 10-3, Dave Chisnall 16-12 and Glen Durrant on the way to the final.

He came up short against the in-form Price, but I fancy him to come out on top in the second quarter.

MvG a wounded warrior

Michael van Gerwen may have missed out at the Grand Slam, but he still remains the one to beat in the field.

As usual, he should be able to breeze through the first few rounds, before it reaches the crunch stages of semi-finals, and then it will be down to if he can hold his nerve.

Michael Smith may not be in the best form of his life, but he was still able to reach the quarter-finals at the Grand Slam, before finding Glen Durrant too hot to handle – losing 16-12.

He’s also reached the semi-finals of the European Championship and the Champions League of Darts, and he is ultimately one of the best players in the field who hasn’t won a major final on the PDC circuit, despite reaching four of them.

Smith’s side of the draw is the toughest of them all – especially with Michael van Gerwen, and if he can get the better of him then there is no reason why he cannot go on and pick up that elusive win, especially at 22/1.
