First run in 1966, the Sprint Cup at Haydock is one of the late-summer highlights of the Flat racing calendar.
The first two home in last year’s renewal come up against each other again, as do the first four in this year’s Commonwealth Cup; the first three in the July Cup; the first two in the Prix Maurice de Gheest and the first pair home in the Duke Of York Stakes.
It looks set to be another lively encounter with 13 runners declared for the race, and our horse racing betting expert previews tomorrow’s feature race and picks out his best bets.
Record favours British trainers
English trainers have dominated this race in recent years, in fact, there hasn’t been on a non-British winner of the race since 2008.
If the odds are anything to go by, then that trend looks set to continue with Martyn Meade’s Advertise a warm favourite at 5/2 with Grosvenorsport.com. Three times a Group One winner, the three-year-old was sent off favourite for the July Stakes at Newmarket but was comfortably beaten by Ten Sovereigns that day. He then bounced back to form when winning the Prix Maurice de Gheest last time and he’s the one to beat.
Stoute has a Dream runner
The forecast rain means Ten Sovereigns is an unlikely runner, so with conditions looking likely to be on the soft side, I’m going to side with Sir Michael Stoute’s DREAM OF DREAMS. He got within a head of beating Blue Point in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes two starts back at Royal Ascot and that form is probably the strongest on offer here.
You can draw a line through his last run in the July Cup where he was unsuited by the fast ground as well as the undulating track. He should get conditions much more to his liking here and he looks the most solid each-way option at 8/1 with Grosvenorsport.com.
