After last week’s thrilling Grand Prix in Germany, which saw all sorts of lead changes, a Max Verstappen win, and Daniil Kvyat on the podium, the F1 entourage rolls into Budapest for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
A few of the big teams come into this with question marks over their heads after struggling in Germany, while Red Bull will be riding high after Verstappen’s second win of the season.
Our F1 expert guides you through the best bets from this weekend’s race.
Hamilton to bounce back?
Lewis Hamilton had a rough weekend last time out in more ways than one. Battling an illness, he seemed to be coping well with the demands of the wet track, which we know brings out the best in him.
However, an uncharacteristic error saw him lose the front wing which led to an emergency pitstop, costing him a full minute of the race, which he never recovered from. It would be foolish to discount the Championship leader though, and he is a very worthy 5/6 favourite to win in Budapest.
Red Bull to excel?
Max Verstappen overcame some serious difficulties in Germany to record an excellent win, and his stock as a driver just keeps climbing higher and higher.
Undoubtedly one of the most talented drivers, there had been plenty of questions over his temperament, due to his propensity for racing accidents. This season he has two podiums to join his two wins, and in recent weeks the Red Bull car has looked really impressive.
He’s already keeping tabs on Hamilton this weekend, and is just 2/1 to win here. However, to drive the fastest lap of the race he is the 3/1 favourite – and this is where the real value is.
Alongside Verstappen, Pierre Gasly has been a disappointment for Red Bull. The car is definitely able to compete at the top of the podium, and yet the young Frenchman hasn’t finished in the top three once this season, and has three races with no points at all.
While he has been given a real opportunity in a Red Bull seat, he needs to start delivering. Fortunately for Gasly, this could be the race. Red Bull managed a fourth-place finish here last year, and with their impressive tweaks to the car, will be looking for a double podium.
He is 6/1 to finish on the podium, which would be a good weekend for him, and offers genuine value, unlike the rest of the top six.
