Glossary: Online slots jargon explained

Click on this function to get the game to play automatically – simply select the number of spins you want to take, a loss limit and let the game do the rest.

Bet

This is the amount of money you’re wagering on a spin. You can place bets per line on multiline games (when there’s more than one payline) and keep an eye on your maximum bet, which is the total of all your bets per line added together.

Bonus rounds

This refers to special games that can be unlocked when you hit a certain combination on the reels during gameplay. It might allow you to play a bonus feature or gain free spins. You could also obtain bonus funds to add to your balance from us – just check our promotions page.

Classic slots

These kinds of online slot games follow the style and gameplay of the traditional slot machines, much like some of those that you might have seen in your local casino.

Daily jackpot

Players can have the chance to win this jackpot once per day on top of their standard winnings. This jackpot is available across a group of games and the prize grows every time a player places a bet.

Free spin

As the name suggests, this lets you spin the reels for free. You can unlock free spins on certain games or from certain promotions.

High paying symbol

These symbols stand out compared to regular symbols, and are usually a picture or other special image. They pay more than regular symbols.

Hit

One of the words used to refer to a game win.

Jackpot slots

Jackpot King

This type of jackpot is linked across multiple games, with up to 1% of each bet adding to the prize money.

Multiline slots

Must-go jackpot

This jackpot gathers across a group of multiple games, with the prize money growing as different players place their bets. It’s designed for one player to win the jackpot when it reaches a certain amount.

Network jackpot

This is a type of jackpot that is available to different players across a network of games available on different casinos, which increases with each bet placed. An example of a network jackpot is King Jackpots.

Payline

A line where you need to match up the right symbols to win. Some games have just one payline, while others can have up to 100,000. The number of paylines within a game determines the amount of different ways you can win.

Payout

The money you get when you win a game.

Paytable

This is where you can see all the potential winning combinations of symbols as well as the kinds of payouts you could receive.

Progressive jackpot

A type of jackpot that increases with every bet. It keeps growing every time it’s not won, until someone finally wins the prize. The rules for each game will state how that specific jackpot increases.

RNG or Random Number Generator

The system that slots games use as a fair way to decide which symbols the reels will land on.

Reels

These are what you need to spin to try to line up the symbols and win. In a traditional slot machine, you’d spin three reels and try to line up the winning symbols on one payline. These days, as well as your classic three-reel slots games, you’ll also see plenty of five-reel slots and some with many more reels and paylines.

Re-spin

Much like a free spin, a re-spin allows you to spin the reels again if you unlock this feature during a game.

RTP or Return to Player

Keep an eye out for this when choosing an online slots game, as it’s the percentage of money that is paid back to players compared to what they put in.

Scatter symbol

These are special symbols that can unlock bonus features or potentially get you a payout, wherever they land.

Spin

This describes when you’re moving the reels during the game.

Video slots

A style of slots game with a theme that’s brought to life with video and animation sequences.

Volatility

This explains how likely you are to win at a game in relation to how much the payout is – low volatility slot games have more frequent winners but lower payouts, compared to high volatility slots, which have higher payouts but fewer wins.

Wild symbols

These can act as a substitute for any symbol in the game and can help you get a payout if one of these lands within an otherwise winning combination.

Win

When the reels land with one of the right combinations on one of the paylines, you win.
