While we are a week removed from the miraculous events of Aintree where Tiger Roll won his second Grand National in a row, there’s still some great action over the Jumps to come, starting with the Scottish Grand National on Saturday at Ayr.
As is customary in these sorts of races, it looks a deviously difficult handicap to decipher, but our horse racing betting expert has given it a good crack and gives you his best bet.
Dingo Dollar eyes Scottish windfall
Dingo Dollar looks set to head the market after a solid performance at Doncaster last time. He was giving the winner over a stone that day and must go close if repeating that run, particularly as he’s off a one pound lower mark this time around.
Alan King’s runner is probably the one to beat as he still looks well-handicapped with Beware The Bear standing his ground.
The Nicky Henderson-trained nine-year-old was an impressive winner of the Ultima Chase at the Cheltenham, but he’s up nine pounds for that win and it looks a pretty tough task off such a lofty weight.
He was pulled up in this race last year too, so is definitely not for me at 9/1.
Every Cloud has a silver lining
Instead, I like the claims of the horse that finished second to him at Cheltenham, Vintage Clouds at 9/1.
The 10-year-old fell at the first in the Aintree equivalent last week, but he was well-fancied for that and I think in a slightly lesser race, he should go close.
Granted, he’s off a five pound higher marker now, but his run at Cheltenham suggested the wind operation he had earlier in the season has done the trick.
His trainer Sue Smith is a master with these staying chasers and while this race might have been an afterthought, he ran well to finish third in it last year having run similarly at Cheltenham the time before.
I fancy him to run a big race once again and he should be backed.
