People often ask me whether I play online or whether I prefer live poker or online poker. For many it’s a direct comparison or choice but for me it’s different. When I started out playing the internet didn’t exist, let along online poker rooms! I grew up playing live and that is where I believe my strengths lie.
Having said that I was there when online poker was born. How many of you remember Planet Poker with Mike Caro (opened in 1998) and Paradise Poker too? All games were limit and to start with there were no tournaments. I do remember when Paradise introduced waitress service and you could order a cup of tea or a cocktail – Oh and the donuts! Who remembers ordering those and they appeared right next to you, pink icing and the chocolate ones!?
Soon after that one the the biggest rooms appeared, Ultimatebet. The main reason I mention them is because they used to charge you to deposit! Yep, deposit $100 and get your card charged for $110 (I think it was about 10%, it might have been slightly under). Can you imagine an online card room trying to do that now?
Much has changed since the late 1990’s and early 2000s. There has been much consolidation, much improvement and vastly improved promotions and online festivals. Since Grosvenor Poker moved onto the Microgaming network they have really invested and seen great increases in numbers too.
Last month they had a £30,000 promo giveaway in cash games. A big shout out to ‘stpokered11’ who won both the high and the low leaderboards and two MPNPT Battle of Malta packages. There is great value in these promos which was proven by ‘Nut_allergy’ who won a £500 leaderboard prize by just winning £10.54 playing online last month.
There is more good news. GCOOP III is on it’s way! Starting Sunday 25th November and running through to Sunday 2nd December. There will be £5000 in Freerolls in the week leading up with a ton of value satellites.
Grosvenor Poker will be giving away £15,000 in added value including a £12,000 GUKPT Passport sponsorship package for 2019 (leaderboard, similar to last year). All 5 sponsored players, Jeff, Katie, Andy, Rick and yours truly, will have a “Back your pro” lobby for a £1,000 Grosvenor Live ticket Freeroll. In all events that pros play they will have a £30 bounty on our heads.

I’ll be playing every day, well that’s the plan, and I’m particularly looking forward to the £225 PLO highroller. The last time I played that I was out on Andy Booth’s stag do so I played it on my mobile! Many of the events have smallish fields and they have great structures that mean they don’t finish too late. You can come out on top, win a GCOOP and still get up for work in the morning!
Oh and don’t forget the guarantees! Over £120,000!
I hope to see you online and best of luck!
Joe
